Hello! My name’s Alec, sometimes known as ‘that museum guy’. If you’re reading this, then I guess that I can safely assume you’ve stumbled across my blog.
If you’re still reading this, I’ll assume that I have your attention! I started this blog for a few reasons. Firstly, I want to use it as an opportunity to discuss one of my passions in life – that passion being museums. Secondly, I want to use it as an opportunity to share some of my research whilst I complete my dissertation. And, lastly, I’d like to use it as a forum to create discussions with you lot, around museums, around history, and around our heritage.
If that sounds like the sort of thing you’d be interested in, you’re definitely in the right place! So I guess I should tell you a bit about myself…
I’ve been working in museums for over two years now, but I’ve been passionate about museums for far longer. Since I was but a wee lad, I’ve had a fascination with history. As a child, I grew up loving dinosaurs and I was spellbound by ancient history. As I got a little older, that interest in ancient history acted as a gateway into other historical time periods, and I quickly realised that my enjoyment of history wasn’t bound by dates and ‘subjects’. Rather, I enjoyed history for the stories that laid forgotten, for the objects preserved by time and because, in the act of remembering, I felt as though I was being transported to a world unlike my own.
Naturally, this love of history eventually led me to explore museums. The more time that I spent visiting museums, the more it dawned on me that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be surrounded by history but, not only that, I wanted to be surrounded by other people enjoying history as well.
So that’s why I ended up working in museums, well, the Museum of the Order of St John to be specific… but that’s a story for another blog post. Another story for another blog post is my reasoning for studying an MA in Museum Studies, and why I decided to focus my dissertation on social media in museums. But I’m sure I’ll be writing a lot around the subject in due course.
So that’s me in a nutshell; just your average museum guy.
Oh, and I should probably mention that one of my other passions is video-games. But I have a whole other website for all that malarkey – www.implayin.co.uk
